BK TORNADO ATTACKS EVERYONE, UNLEASHES BILL PAXTON NOSTALGIA

BROOKLYNTORNADOPOCALPYSE 2K10!!

Everyone in NY today was stunned by the sudden, furious and fast storm that swept through the city and left much carnage in its wake, even killing someone in Queens when a tree fell on a car. Was it actually a tornado? As of press time, the Weather Service was still looking into it. But it certainly looked hellaciously windy from our 5th floor perch on State Street. Here’s what was going on just one block over on State Street between 3rd Ave and Nevins, where you will see one very large tree was uprooted (though it did not appear any person or property was injured).

As roommate Lars put it: So much for being the Greenest Block in Brooklyn.

But seeing as this is 2010, every single second of this tornado/whatever has already been internet catalogued and is now googleable. Brooklyn365 has a good roundup of videos of the storm, and Pat’s Papers posted this one of some bros doing as bros do in a crisis (hint: saying “DUDE!!” a whole lot) in what could likely become the Double Rainbow video of this news event. But NY Mag is the winner so far by finding the best torNYdo pic so far, featuring Twitter user Jazzy BK and her niece Sara:

All this, by the way, appeared on the internet within 30 minutes of the branches falling outside our windows, long before even the WCBS news van showed up on State Street that evening. Crowd sourcing!

One of the most common slights against the blogosphere (that word itself now somewhat of a slight as it segregates blogs into a shady lawless bubble separate from polite media society) is that bloggers are a parasitic bunch who take the output of hardworking journalists and adorn it with their own commentary, snark, derision, insights or, occasionally, supplemental information. This happens, as the trope goes, while bloggers concurrently deride the value of traditional media such as the Times and CNN, throwing hand grenades of viral discontent at the very hands that feed them (for no charge too).

This is no doubt true in many cases. The vampiric media syndrome is the bane of journalists who watch people tear their work to shreds on the internet, knowing full well that bloggers would have nothing to talk about if the New York Times, WSJ and so forth suddenly stopped publishing. Even on a large-scale, successful blog site, such as Gothamist, I’m not a fan. The Gothamist model essentially rounds up the interesting news items from the Times, Post, Daily News, NY1 and others and summarizes it for their audiences, adding a level of humor, snark or commentary (which is admittedly lacking from the big sources) and repackaging it in a more attractive way for the blog-savvy masses. The site seems to contain no original content, and has no “About” page.  So is this a ravenous site posing as an aggregator, with robotic levels of anonymity? Don’t think we can’t find you.

UPDATE 12:19 am: The site is owned by this guy — the one on the left — Michael Bahlitzanakis, a “serial entrepreneur, domainer and now developer,” according to (no joke):  DomainNameNews.com.

He’s the owner of BPHG Media, which has more than 4,000 “premium generics,” including weblog.com, city.com, prices.com and cellphones.com.

In the release, Bahlitzanakis says: “Our strategy has never wavered since our inception. We believe long-term value appreciation has always been expressed in the development of individual domain-independent businesses.”

For Alexis Miesen, Atlantic Avenue had all the makings of the quintessential Brooklyn thoroughfare that combines the charm of a small town with the pace of city life. With its colorful boutique storefronts, diverse dining options, smattering of coffee shops, and antique stores, she expected to see happy families strolling along the street sharing ice cream cones.

There was one problem: There was no ice cream anywhere around.

“It’s filled with all these fantastic bars and restaurants and shops and it just has this really great kind of energy. They have all these great amenities to the community but no great ice cream shop,” she said. “This is a gap in what other people are offering.”

Less than three years later, Miesen and her partner Jennie Dundas had opened not only an ice cream shop on Atlantic Avenue, but also had rapidly expanded the franchise to two other Brooklyn locations, feeding summertime crowds that often form lines winding out the door. Blue Marble’s organic, grass-fed dairy-based ice cream has been praised on The Martha Stewart Show, CNN, and in a bevy of New York publications.

Brooklyn has become as much a brand these days as a location. Slap the word “Brooklyn” on a piece of clothing and it’s instantly edgy, and quite likely to sell. New York City’s most populous borough remains a popular place to start a business, and Miesen and Dundas are emblematic of the grassroots, DIY entrepreneurs across the borough who’ve found a niche, and a loyal fan base that helps spread their brand along the way.

The surge of creative energy, young artists and recent graduates is putting Brooklyn on the map not just for its booming music scene but also as competition with San Francisco to see who will lead the next Internet revolution.

Business owners say starting a venture in Brooklyn requires creativity, a careful study of neighborhoods, and a good deal of Web 2.0 savvy. We talked with several successful companies about why the county of Kings is a bubbling cauldron of entrepreneurship, and how to get in on the action.

Brooklyn War Stories: Casualty of the Saturn edition

Moving to Brooklyn war stories: if you’re here now, you’ve got em; I’ve got em, we all do, especially Mr. Darcy, who was bounced around our fine borough like a pinball with tourette’s syndrome during his first few months and can (and maybe will?) share stories of being woken up in a sublet by cops banging down the door and a horribly unfortunate end to an ill-fated internship at certain hippness-centric magazine (hint: its name is synonymous with “lechery.”)

Buddy Alex Weisler over at Brokelyn had an interesting idea: he’s starting his senior year at Penn State soon (managing editor of the Daily Collegian too: Student journalism represent!) and noted that, for many college kids these days, Brooklyn remains the shining holy city on the hill for post-graduation adventures, “a sort of hipster paradise of bloggers, vegans, flannel shirts and facial hair.”

To throw some ice water on those raging hard-ons for Brooklyn, he’s soliciting war stories about what it’s really like to throw yourself at the mercy of the county of Kings. All told, I had a pretty good streak of luck transforming from jobless-homeless-dollarless scalawag to semi-employed semi-housed NY-license holding resident (my main goal was to tread water, and I feel OK at least declaring this one a win).
